The Aliens Department opened a file for each individual alien. Up to 1935 these files formed part of the Home Office's main six-figure file series (see HO 45 and HO 144). After that date a new series for aliens was introduced in which the file number was allocated according to the first letter of the alien's surname and with the next available number. Six-figure files which were still live were incorporated into the new series. |
