The catalogue for HO 144 is arranged in subject order within blocks of years. The subject headings used are those used by the Home Office in its registers: HO 46 The catalogue for earlier years and the Index to Naturalisations cite the original Home Office file number only. When ordering these files catalogue reference comprises a box number as well as the file number; from HO 144/1771 onwards the file number is not required. The box number can be found in the packing list shelved with the subject lists (the file should be sought in the appropriate block of years). The full document reference will be in the following form: HO 144/box number/file number, eg. HO 144/917/180423. |

The indexes do not cover individuals who became British citizens by registration under the provisions of the British Nationality Act 1948. |
