The first memorial, a statue by Carlo Marochetti, was completed in 1853. The Office of Works acquired responsibility for it under the Public Statues Act 1854. Marochetti’s work was judged too large for the site; he was required to create a second, smaller, statue, which was erected in Parliament Square in 1866. Following a decision in Parliament in 1868, this was removed and in 1874 was melted down for recasting to a new design by Matthew Noble. Noble’s statue was erected in 1877. |
