Administrative / biographical background: |
The Office of Works first acquired responsibility for statues and memorials in London under the Public Statues Act of 1854. Its responsibilities extended gradually beyond those named in the schedule to the Act, to encompass not merely individual pieces, but also the management of Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square. |
