History:	Formed in October 1959 when the civil aviation functions of the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation were transferred to the Ministry of Supply on its reorganisation as the Ministry of Aviation, and so the department again reverted to the title of Ministry of Transport. This third Ministry of Transport was responsible for inland transport, shipping and common services. In 1965 most of its shipping functions passed to the Board of Trade, and in November 1970 it was absorbed into the new Department of the Environment.
