History: In 1918, the name of the Royal Aircraft Factory was changed to the Royal Aircraft Establishment. The establishment was initially the responsibility of the the Ministry of Munitions before passing to the Air Ministry in January 1920. Control of the establishment passed successively to the Ministry of Aircraft Production in 1940, the Ministry of Supply in 1946, the Ministry of Aviation in 1959 and the Ministry of Defence in 1964. The establishment was based at Farnborough, Hampshire, and was a research and experimental establishment for aerospace research and development. The establishment's name underwent a minor change in 1988, the term 'Aircraft' being replaced by 'Aerospace', to reflect the broader scope of the organisation's research work by that time.
