Charles Stuart to [Under Secretary] William Chetwynd: election of the stadholder of Zealand. Invasion of Middelburg by peasants angry at the state of the town's defences. Meeting between the aides-de-camp of the prince of Orange and Saxe: Saxe's message is that since the French intend to restore Bergen op Zoom in any peace settlement, the Dutch may repair the defences; he demands that firewood and provisions be made available. Stuart's dispute with the Dutch envoy Hop. Fall of Lillo. He does not believe Zealand to be in danger. A naval council of war to be held in Middelburg. Dated at Flushing. ff. 401-405 |
