Marlborough to Boyle: the prince d'Enghien, Brigadier Cano and M. d'Aubigni have made a proposal for the surrender of the town and citadel [of Ghent], which he has accepted. He expects Bruges to follow suit. As the campaign is now virtually over, he suggests that the six battalions at Ostend be returned to England. He encloses a copy [SP 87/3/121] of the king of Prussia [Frederick I]'s response to his letter. Dated at camp at Meirelbeke. PS. in Marlborough's hand that hostages have been exchanged and that the garrison will be conducted to Tournai on Wednesday. ff. 242, 243 |
