Marlborough to Boyle: on 15 September the French sent twelve battalions into Douai, retired towards Orchies, and on 16 September continued their advance towards Tournai, where they crossed the Scheldt. He intends to march towards Pont d'Espierre the next day to observe them. Colonel Freke has arrived at Oudenaarde with ammunition from Ath for the siege [of Lille]. As Count de la Motte has marched from Ghent towards Ninove with most the garrisons of Ghent and Bruges, Major General Murray has orders to march with most of the troops in Dutch Flanders to Brussels. Slow progress of the siege. He encloses a short treaty he has signed with the prince for the 4,000 German troops sent from Italy to Barcelona. Dated at camp at Sainghin [-en-Weppes]. ff. 179, 180
