The British Overseas Trade Board was formed in 1972 to direct and develop the Government's export promotion services and overseas finance and planning on behalf of the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. The Board consisted of business leaders and representatives from the Confederation of British Industry, the Trade Union Congress, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Exports Credit Guarantee Department and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Its President was the Secretary of State for Trade. The Board was assisted in its work by: a Secretariat; Finance and General Purposes Committee; Publicity and Promotions Branch; and Advisory Council. The Board was chaired by the following: Lord Thorneycroft 1972-1975; Sir Frederick Catherwood 1975-1979; Earl of Limerick 1979-1983; the Earl Jellicoe 1983-1987; Sir James Cleminson, 1987-1988. |
