Catalogue description 1. Sir Edward Thornton (1766-1852)

Sir Edward Thornton, G.C.B was. (1766-1852). He held various diplomatic posts in the U.S.A., 1791 to 1804, Hamburg and the Hanse Towns, 1805 to 1815, including a special mission to negotiate treaties of alliance with Sweden and Russia in 1811. He was minister (later ambassador) to Portugal from 1817 to 1821 and from 1823 until his retirement in 1824.
