During the Second World War R V Jones was Assistant Director of Intelligence (Air) and in 1946 he became director; consequently the papers in this series mainly concern German radio direction finding equipment, long range rockets and pilotless aircraft (Operation CROSSBOW) as well as later technical intelligence, conference, visits and research.The series also includes several files relating to his work on the development of axial flow engines, 1953-1954.

Administrative / biographical background:

Reginald Victor Jones CB, CBE, FRS, born 29 Sept 1911, left Oxford after gaining MA DPhil and joined the Air Ministry in 1936 as a Scientific Officer. Between 1938-1939 he was seconded to the Admiralty but returned to the Air Ministry as a member of the Air Staff. he became Assistant director of Intelligence (Air) in 1941 and in 1946 he became Director. Between 1952-1953 he was Director of Scientific Intelligence in the Ministry of Defence. He died on 17 December 1997.

Throughout his career he was a member and chairman of various committees and advisory panels on scientific subjects, defence and safety.
