Administrative / biographical background:

A Colonial Products Research Council was constituted early in 1943 following the recommendation of a Committee of Alternative Uses for Colonial Products set up in 1941. Its function was to advise the Secretary of State for the Colonies as to the research that should be conducted on the renewable resources of the colonies to help bring about their greater use. It had its own director of research and initiated and supervised work actually carried out by existing research bodies such as the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Agricultural Research Council. The council was accommodated at the Imperial Institute.

In 1954 it was replaced by a Colonial Products Council, which in addition to performing the duties of its predecessor oversaw the work of the Colonial Products Laboratory. In 1959 it was dissolved and replaced by the Tropical Products Institute Steering Committee.
