Administrative / biographical background: |
Formerly part of the Ottoman Empire, Cyprus was handed over to Britain by Turkey for administrative purposes in 1878. Responsibility for Cyprus affairs was transferred from the Foreign Office to the Colonial Office on 6 December 1880. Cyprus became an independent republic on 16 August 1960 and a member of the Commonwealth on 13 March 1961. |
