Administrative / biographical background: |
The Milk Development Council (MDC) was a Non Departmental Public Body established by the Agriculture Ministers following the reorganisation of the milk industry at the end of 1994. Its primary purposes are to fund research and development, economic research, nutritional and educational advice, livestock improvement, the gathering and publication of statistics, provision of dairy market information and the generic promotion of milk and dairy products. The MDC is funded by a statutory levy on all milk sold off farms in Great Britain, producing an annual budget in the region of £7.5m. The MDC was run by a Council of 11 persons appointed by the Ministers, and supported by a staff of 24 people based at the office in Cirencester and field staff based in the regions. On 1 April 2008 the MDC was replaced by DairyCo, which reported a new levy board - the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). |
