Administrative / biographical background: |
In 2000, the Advisory Committee on Consumer Products and the Environment (ACCPE) first proposed the idea of an online information service (with helpline back-up etc.) about the impacts and choices surrounding key products and consumption activities. The proposal for the Environment Direct service was included in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs' Five Year Strategy with the aim of the service being up and running in 2006. However, it was then decided that the Environment Direct would not be a standalone website, but would be placed onto the Directgov website. This was managed by the existing Transformational Government governance structure as part of the development of the ‘environment and greener living’ franchise on Directgov. |
