Administrative / biographical background:

Until 1982 the movement of freight by rail was regionally organised, each region having Freight Managers responsible to the Chief Freight Manager at headquarters. After the introduction of sector management in 1982, Railfreight became a separate business responsible for the development of the trainload freight business. There were five subsector trainload freight businesses dealing respectively with the movement of coal, petrol, aggregates, metals and automobiles. Each subsector had a National Business Manager responsible to the Director Freight at headquarters.

Between 1988 and 1992 Railfreight controlled Railfreight Distribution (wagonload and deep sea container freight; see AN 115 and AN 204 to AN 207) and Trainload Freight. Under this system Trainload Business managers replaced National Business Managers, responsible to the Director Trainload Freight. Trainload Freight was divided into three companies Mainline, Loadhaul and Transrail, all owned by the British Railways Board until they were sold in 1995.
