Administrative / biographical background:

The United Nations (Political) Department maintained the same functions and title under the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as had applied for several years in the Foreign Office. Its main roles were to formulate and manage general policy towards the United Nations, to advise other departments on relations with the United Nations, and to handle all matters relating to United Nations political and administrative questions, trusteeship and colonial questions, peace-keeping and proceedings in the General Assembly.

In 1973 the United Nations (Political) and the United Nations (Economic and Social) Departments were merged as a single United Nations Department. Each branch of the new department continued using its existing registered file series for files created in 1974 and 1975, but in 1976 a new file series (UN) was created and both political and economic and social subject files are added to FCO 58 from that point onwards.
