Administrative / biographical background: |
Animal Health was formed on 2 April 2007 as an executive agency of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and was primarily responsible for ensuring that farmed animals in Great Britain were healthy, disease-free and well looked after. It was formed when the State Veterinary Service (created 1865) joined with the Egg Marketing Inspectorate, the Dairy Hygiene Inspectorate, and the Wildlife Licensing and Registration Service. On 1 April 2011 it merged with the Veterinary Laboratories Agency to form the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA). |
