Date: 1989-2009
History: The National Weights and Measures Laboratory (NWML), based at Teddington in Middlesex, was established on 18 April 1989. Agency status was confirmed, following a Review, in July 1995, and again in May 2001. The NWML is responsible for ensuring all trade measurements are accurate, legal and fair to both buyer and seller. It provides the following services: type approval; mass, length and volume calibration; ISO 9001 certification; metrology training; and consultancy. On 28 June 2007, the NWML became part of the new Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. On 1 April 2009, the NWML became the National Measurement Office, an Executive Agency of the new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS).
