History: | The UKHO is the world leader in the supply of navigational charts/publications and for providing critical maritime safety information; its primary activity, as a Government Trading Fund and part of MoD, is the provision of navigational products/services to the Royal Navy and merchant marine in compliance with Safety Of Life At Sea regulations. It has been charting the world's oceans and coastlines since 1795 when, under Royal Warrant (George III), the Office of Hydrographer to the Admiralty was created, and Alexander Dalrymple was appointed as the first Hydrographer. Since 1958, the UKHO has accepted the responsibilities of an authorised place of deposit under the Public Records Act, which allows it to maintain its own Archive; this contains a vast collection dating from 1755, used as source information for navigational publications. Since 1968 the UKHO has been based at Taunton. On 6 April 1990 it was established as an Executive Agency, operating as a Trading Fund from 1 April 1996. |
