Title: Prince of Wales; Chevalier de St George; The 'Old Pretender'
History: The 'Old Pretender'. Son of deposed James II of England and Mary of Modena. Claimant to English and Scottish thrones. Proclaimed king at St Germains on father's death, 1701, and styled by supporters James III of England and James VIII of Scotland; adherence to Roman Catholicism caused English Parliament to pass bill of attainder against him. In 1708 he set out in French ships to invade Scotland but British drove him away before he could land. Distinguished himself fighting in French army in War of Spanish Succession, 1701–14 (accompanied abortive French expedition to Scotland 1706, and served with the French at Oudenaarde 1708 and Malplaquet 1709). In 1714, refused to renounce Roman Catholicism in order to be designated heir to English throne. In 1715, Earl of Mar raised a rebellion in Scotland (first Jacobite rebellion) in favour of James, and on 22 Dec he landed at Peterhead. By 10 Feb 1716 the uprising collapsed and James returned to France. Remainder of his life passed in Italy.
