War correspondent for the 'Morning Post' during the Boer War, 1899-1900, captured and making escape from Pretoria. Conservative, Liberal, then Conservative MP for constituencies in Oldham, NW Manchester, Dundee, Epping and Woodford (first elected MP in 1900). Early ministerial positions included: President of Board of Trade, 1908-10; Home Secretary, 1910-11; First Lord of the Admiralty, 1911-15; Secretary of State for (various titles) War, Air and the Colonies, 1919-22; Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1924-29. Later, First Lord of the Admiralty, 1939-40, and Prime Minister, May 1940- July 1945 and Oct 1951-Apr 1955 (resigned). Retired 1964. Knighted 1953.
