History:

Sir Fulke Greville, a younger son of Sir Edward Greville of Milcote (Warwickshire), married in 1526 Elizabeth Willoughby, granddaughter of Robert, 2nd Baron Willoughby de Broke, through whom he inherited part of the Beauchamp estates in Warwickshire and estates in Staffordshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire (see also Lygon, Earls Beauchamp). His grandson, Sir Fulke Greville, Baron Brooke (d. 1628), obtained a grant of Warwick Castle in 1604, and the family also accumulated estates in Gloucestershire, Somerset and Middlesex. He was succeeded by his cousin Robert Greville of Thorpe Latimer (Lincolnshire) as 2nd Baron. The 4th Baron (c.1638-77) married Anne, daughter and heir of John Dodington of Breamore (Hampshire), through whom estates in Hampshire, Wiltshire, Glamorganshire and elsewhere were inherited. The 7th Baron married in 1716 Mary, daughter and co-heir of the Hon. Henry Thynne, of Leweston (Dorset). The 8th Baron (1719-73) was created Earl Brooke in 1746 and Earl of Warwick in 1759. Extensive sales in the early 19th century reduced the estates to those in Warwickshire and Somerset.

The 5th Earl of Warwick married in 1881 Frances, daughter of the Hon. C.H. Maynard and heiress of the last Viscount Maynard's estates in Essex, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire. William Maynard of Easton (Essex), son of Sir Henry Maynard, secretary to Lord Treasurer Burghley, had been created Baron Maynard in 1628, and his son, the 2nd Baron, had married in 1641 Dorothy, only daughter of Sir Robert Banastre of Passenham (Northamptonshire), through whom the Northamptonshire and Leicestershire estates were inherited. Lady Warwick died in 1938, being succeded in the Maynard estates by her younger son, the Hon. Maynard Greville (d. 1960).

Estates in 1883: Warwick: 8,262 acres in Warwickshire and 1,840 acres in Somerset, worth a total of £18,336 a year. Maynard: 8,617 acres in Essex, 4,411 acres in Leicestershire, 802 acres in Northamptonshire, 8 acres in Cambridgeshire and 6 acres in Middlesex, worth £20,001 a year.
